Individuals sticking to a gluten-free diet may only consume oats that are marked as being gluten-free. Gluten free Oats are produced, handled and packaged to avoid contamination. Uncontaminated oats that test at 20 parts per million (ppm) gluten or less may be labelled ‘gluten free’.

Oats contain avenin, which is a protein similar to gluten. Research has shown that most people with coeliac disease can tolerate gluten free oats with no problems.

Oats are a wonderful source of soluble fibre, which can support gut wellness, lower cholesterol, and maintain stable blood sugar levels.

The issue is that sometimes many standard oats are produced in the same place as wheat, barley and rye, and then become contaminated with these other grains and gluten.

Gluten free Oats can be incorporated into your diet at any point. A very small number of people with coeliac disease may still be sensitive to gluten free oat products. Please discuss the usage of gluten-free oats with your healthcare provider if you experience persistent symptoms or have any concerns while eating them. They can monitor you and provide you with tailored guidance.

If unsure, speak to your help care provider or a dietician to help you decide if you can include gluten free oats in your diet.
